MEL becomes an energy producer
MEL, the largest carton-board producer in the Balkans and one of the largest industrial units in Northern Greece, celebrates its 53rd birthday this year, entering a new era. A long-waited dream is coming true with MEL signing a contract with EDA-THES, according to which in 2021 the natural gas pipeline will reach the factory, with a construction cost that reaches 2 million Euros. MEL intends to build in the meantime an electricity generation unit for sale, using natural gas, an investment amounting to 5 million Euros and will be covered with the Company’s own funds, with the support of PAK Group, where it belongs, without bank loans or subsidies.
This new power plant with a capacity of 8.6MW per year, shall also allow MEL to use its released thermal loads in its production process. As a result, MEL shall make a minimum 2 million Euros per year profit. Thus, this investment shall strengthens MEL significantly and will also benefit the entire region and thousands of residents in the wider area, who shall also make use of the gas network that will be constructed.
